City Administrator Leaving

3/7/12

Brian Heck, City Administrator of Shorewood, told his staff yesterday that he was leaving. Seems the council has lost confidence in him. Council met Monday night in executive session to discuss Heck's performance and this is apparently the result of that meeting (executive sessions are not public so, no details are available).

Heck was hired about three and one half years ago after the departure, under similar circumstances, of then Administrator Craig Dawson. Heck has appeared to have developed a base of supporters, but also detractors. The detractors seem to have won out. Details about the departure are forthcoming.

Of note, earlier this year the Insider predicted Heck would be fired and replaced by ex-Administrator Dawson. The first half of the prediction is now fact. It remains to be seen if Mayor Lizee makes the second part come true. Dawson was reportedly just hired as a project manager for the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District.

  1. What a shame. While not everybody liked him, Heck was not afraid to stir things up when necessary. He was smart and interesting and on top of things. This is very sad.

  2. The Mayor should tell the citizens exactly what caused her to terminate his contract. If she doesn't,and hires another one of her friends as his replacement, it is cronyism pure and simple.

  3. At last, we had an administrator whose priority was process and policy (translate to "not politics") and look where it got him. He deserves better.

Insider, if you can, please keep us posted on what this decision will cost the taxpayers, if anything.

  4. Mr. Heck has been the most professional, innovative and forward thinking Administrator this city has ever had. He was not afraid to get out from behind the desk, roll up his sleeves and help resolve an issue. This is a huge loss for Shorewood. My prediction -- complacency returns.

  5. As a resident who had minor dealings with Mr. Heck, I am disappointed. He really seemed too qualified for this city. I hope he finds a place that appreciates his skills.
